Everything is set up at our community centre for the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Edson Barboza fight on December 30, it is the same big screen we watched the US presidential election on. The fight is still two days away but we start with the build-up, the interviews, the predictions, the analysis this evening. The guys in charge of the viewing list included a short documentary on the making of a tough motherfucker and an absolute beast that is Khabib Nurmagomedov, whose childhood pastimes included wrestling bears as a 7-year old (there are still videos of it on Youtube).
Yesterday we discussed the fight with the guys and I mentioned that wrestling was a national sport in Khabib's native Dagestan. One of our Russian volunteers (Dagestan is part of Russia) immediately disagreed with me:
- Wrestling is not their national sport.
- Really? I was told that it was.
- No. They have a national sport but it is not wrestling.
- What is it then?
